“Spider-Man: Brand New Day” Breaks All Records at The Domestic Box Office
According to ticket sales data given by Sony Pictures (6758.T), “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” established an all-time record at U.S. and Canadian movie box offices over the weekend, earning $360 million to surpass the milestone set by 2019 superhero blockbuster “Avengers: Endgame.” The film opens a new tab on Monday.
The film sold $932 million worth of tickets worldwide, making it the second highest-grossing film ever.
According to Sony’s projections on Sunday morning, the new “Spider-Man” adventure will come in second domestically, behind the Avengers film, which debuted at $357 million before accounting for inflation.
Without taking inflation into consideration, the day’s ticket sales exceeded projections, propelling “Spider-Man” to the top of the all-time box office records.
The film, which features actor Tom Holland in his fourth Spider-Man film, shows Peter Parker battling crime in a society that has forgotten he is Spider-Man. As Parker’s true love, MJ, Zendaya co-stars. Viewers came back for a movie based on Parker’s battles with loneliness and his need for human connection.
Tom Rothman, chairman and CEO of Sony Pictures Entertainment’s Motion Picture Group, stated, “Spider-Man: Brand New Day is fundamentally a movie about friendship, about the balm of connection in all our lives, and that is resonant to audiences of all ages and all around the world.”
“Avengers: Endgame” remains at the top even after accounting for inflation. Over the course of its 2019 opening weekend, the movie made an inflation-adjusted $1.6 billion in ticket sales worldwide, including $467 million in the United States and Canada.
One of Marvel’s most well-known comic book characters, Spider-Man continues to have a cinematic appeal despite viewers’ growing disinterest in the superhero genre. With a 90% rating from critics and a 98% rating from moviegoers on Rotten Tomatoes, the most recent chapter has been warmly received.
