Leadership Shift at OpenAI: AGI Launch Executive Steps Down After Medical Absence
OpenAI faces a prominent corporate transition as the executive in charge of artificial general intelligence implementation steps down after an extended health leave. Fidji Simo, the company’s CEO of AGI deployment, announced on Thursday that she will leave her full-time executive role. She will move instead into a part-time advisory position at the ChatGPT maker, following a medical absence caused by a chronic neuroimmune condition.
Simo explained on social media that three months ago, a severe exacerbation of a chronic illness she has lived with for seven years forced her to take medical leave. During her time away, she realized that her path to recovery would be much longer and more complex than she initially anticipated, requiring her full focus. Simo previously worked as the chief executive of Instacart and managed the Facebook app at Meta. She was one of three external directors who joined the OpenAI board in March 2024 following the return of Sam Altman as chief executive. Altman expressed his deep appreciation for her contributions and friendship on social media following the announcement.
This senior leadership departure occurs at a critical moment for OpenAI as the company prepares for an initial public offering amid massive global demand for artificial intelligence software. Before the upcoming IPO, company executives focused heavily on robotics and advanced research, aiming to combine these advanced capabilities into a single cohesive super-app. To reflect this strategic focus, the firm previously changed Simo’s corporate title from CEO of applications to CEO of AGI deployment. Coinciding with her announcement, OpenAI unveiled this long-awaited super-app on Thursday, introducing a new artificial intelligence agent designed to help office workers utilize coding tools affordably.
According to an internal company memo reported by Bloomberg News, OpenAI will split Simo’s product and business duties among President Greg Brockman, Chief Financial Officer Sarah Friar, and Chief Strategy Officer Jason Kwon. Simo has previously shared her diagnosis of postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome, a rare autonomic nervous system disorder, and remains dedicated to supporting medical research for the condition.
