The‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌ Mérida City Council through the Women’s Institute Office of the Strategic Alliances Coordination, is committed to supporting by all means programs that are instrumental in the women’s autonomy and their general health. The program by giving the most feasible ways for economic independence and career development is intended to be a proper educational tool that equips women with the required knowledge and skills in the personal and business fields to be able to use it wisely.

It is from these programs that women not just improve their financial literacy, but also gain confidence, leadership, and socio-emotional development since the programs provide them with the necessary resources to make the right decisions for their families and themselves.

International Women’s Entrepreneurship Day: A Platform for Growth

On the occasion of International Women’s Entrepreneurship Day, Mérida celebrated the forum “Entrepreneurship Alliances” held at the Olimpo Cultural Center auditorium. It was an event that involved different members of the Network of the Institute of the Women and beneficiaries of programs entrusted to the Directorate of Prosperity and Economic Well-being.

First of all, the mayor of the city, Ms. Cecilia Patrón Laviada made an opening address and she was focused on the city’s determination to achieve the economic empowerment of the women. She enlightened the closeness among the members of the Women’s Institute in the creation of sources of income, skill upgrading and quality of life improvement for women. To cooperate, hand in hand, with women, leading them and offering results that consolidate their professional as well as personal trajectories is what it comes down to, according to the ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌mayor.

Learning‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌ to Separate Business and Personal Finances

One of the main highlights at the event was the educational session titled “Learn to Separate Your Business Finances from Your Family Finances”. The session offered various pragmatic strategies which, if implemented, would lead to money management that promotes financial independence. Alongside this, the panel discussion “Women Building Their Financial Autonomy” served as a platform for the audience to recognize their entrepreneurial potential while comprehending that being economically sound is the key to stability in the long run.

The series of events were aimed at equipping women with the necessary tools that would enable them to confidently face any financial challenges, make developmental plans, and also ensure that their personal and professional finances are separate and properly managed.

Building a Network of Women Entrepreneurs

With the guidance of Yahayra Centeno Ceballos, the Women’s Institute has become a center that actively promotes women’s economic autonomy. Since the start of the current administration, 29 “Allies for Entrepreneurship” markets have taken place not only in Mérida but also in the neighboring communities of Molas, Yaxnic, Texán Cámara, Dzununcán, and Komchén. Also, 11 individual sales points have been created for women entrepreneurs to give them the chance to present their products and grow their businesses.

Currently, over 300 businesses have taken part in these markets. Apart from sales opportunities, these meetings offer training programs and interactive learning spaces from which women can get technical skills, soft skills, and socio-emotional skills necessary for a business to be sustainably ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌grown.

Expanding‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌ Skills Through Courses and Workshops

The range of courses and workshops provided by the institute are aimed at supporting business development as well as the personal growth of the participants. Anyone willing can be part of sessions like “Recognizing My Autonomy,” “Personal Finance,” “Canva Basics for Women Entrepreneurs,” “Product Photography,” and “My First Social Media Network.” Workshops in creative areas such as ceramic plaster, macrame, and other crafts are also available to help participants enhance their artisanal skills.

The collaborations with various organizations such as CECATI, along with the institute’s scholarships, have extended the offerings to feature more in-depth courses like “Business Plan Development,” “Digital Content Creation,” “Creating an Online Store” as well as artisanal soap-making, scented candle-making, plumbing, refrigeration and air conditioning courses. These courses are designed to equip the learners with practical and marketable skills that will give them the ability to produce new income sources and at the same time, grow their businesses.

Comprehensive Support for Women Entrepreneurs

During 2025, the local government was able to provide more than 800 consultations for women entrepreneurs, both in person and in groups. They were centered on important issues such as “Logo Design,” “Social Media Content Creation,” “Trademark Registration,” “Product Costing,” and job placement assistance. Moreover, women were given referrals to programs in entrepreneurship, economic empowerment, and education, as well as the provision of support services aimed at the prevention of and dealing with gender-based violence.

These thorough measures do not only concern the enhancement of women’s business skills, but also the establishment of a network of support through which they can grow, collaborate, and thrive. By facilitating access to education, training, and specialized resources, Mérida is creating the conditions necessary for a sustainable ecosystem of women’s economic independence and personal ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌empowerment.
