Silicon Valley Friction Sparks on X as Apple Takes OpenAI to Court, Fueling Musk-Altman Dispute 

In a series of new posts on X (formerly twitter), Elon Musk and Sam Altman criticized each other highlighting the tech billionaires’ long-standing tussle over the evolution of OpenAI. The two executives originally helped start OpenAI in 2015 as a nonprofit artificial intelligence research lab alongside a band of engineers and scientists. 

Musk left OpenAI’s board in 2018 after donating tens of millions of dollars to the organization. He later objected to Altman’s efforts to construct an opaque web of for-profit OpenAI affiliates. Musk filed a lawsuit regarding this shift that went to trial in California this year. A jury ruled in favor of Altman, though Musk plans to appeal the case. The relationship eroded after Musk borrowed OpenAI engineering personnel to remake Tesla’s Autopilot technology and poached AI researcher Andrej Karpathy. Musk previously pressured OpenAI to give him complete control and merge the lab into Tesla. Altman and other board members rebuffed Musk, who then stopped making promised contributions, leaving OpenAI in a difficult financial position. 

Weeks after the trial, Musk’s company SpaceX, which controls the X platform, completed its landmark initial public offering. SpaceX raised a record $75 billion as it promoted plans to launch data centers into space and advance enterprise AI. Meanwhile, OpenAI filed confidentially for its own IPO. The product rivalry intensified as SpaceX released the Grok 4.5 generative AI model, while OpenAI debuted its own GPT-5.6 Sol. Musk also sued both Apple and OpenAI, alleging anti-competitive practices that lowered Grok in app store rankings. Furthermore, SpaceX plans to close a $60 billion all-stock acquisition of Cursor in the third quarter to compete against OpenAI’s Codex in automated coding. 

The corporate rivalry turned personal after Apple filed suit against OpenAI on Friday over alleged theft of trade secrets. Musk posted, “Scam Altman strikes again,” and later added that Altman takes scamming to a whole new level. The flurry of social activity caught Altman’s attention, who responded by questioning Musk’s space data center plans and joking that Musk’s obsession proved the superiority of the new GPT-5.6 Sol model. An OpenAI spokesperson stated that the company has no interest in other companies’ trade secrets.
