Beau Greaves Takes Center Stage in World Darts Championship as Women’s Participation Hits New High

Beau‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌ Greaves has effectively become the face of women’s darts at the World Darts Championship, heralding what is being called by many a new and historic era for female players. Her appearance at the championship is accompanied by an unmatched level of women’s participation at the sport’s biggest global stage. It is for the first time that five women are competing in the highly coveted tournament, thus, defining a new era in the perception and support of women’s darts.

Only 21 years of age, Greaves is going to the championship after an incredible run in the women’s circuit. She is in an active streak of 86 consecutive wins and currently holds three women’s world titles. Such a level of dominance makes her the very obvious one to stand out of the crowd. She said that she did not aim to become the face of women’s darts, but her performance and consistency have, as a matter of fact, led her to be the most talked-about person.

Basically, to a large extent, it is the rise of Greaves that reflects the overall changes of women’s roles in darts. Some years ago, Fallon Sherrock created history by becoming the first woman ever to win matches at the PDC World Darts Championship. Publicized victories of hers aroused the public’s interest and gave the impression that women could go for the jugular even at the sport’s biggest stage. But in spite of Sherrock’s triumphant breakthrough, it has remained a rare occurrence that women have won at the world championship, until now. Five women have qualified for this year’s tournament, so the chance for women to break through and reach the later stages has never been greater.

Greaves is making it evident that she is up to the task. She has recently gotten the better of heavyweights and in particular, she beat Luke Littler in the World Youth Championship, among others. Her choice to play full-time on the pro circuit and still keep a PDC tour card is a clear indication of her ambition to pit herself against the best players be it male or female. However, even champions are not immune to hardships. Greaves has been very vocal about her fight against dartitis, an ailment that interferes with a thrower’s motion. She went through stages of feeling down and technical difficulties, and she came out on top most of the time, thus, showing that mental toughness is also a factor at elite level in darts.

Her fans and some of the ex-players speak highly of her and her talent and good manners. Lorraine Winstanley, who has worked with the female players all along, refers to Greaves as a person with a balanced mind and a strong will. According to her, Greaves’ achievement cannot but bring the great benefit of the sport through inspiring a large number of young women to take up darts and think of it as a serious competition level.

Besides the personal recognition, the growing number of women participating in the world championship is indicative of much more. Leading personalities in the sport’s management have been supporting women’s darts for the last ten years. The increase in competitive opportunities, such as the Women’s Series and women’s matches in premiere events, has not only raised the bar but has also attracted more talented players.

Although these improvements have been made, there are still differences. The majority of women players have to juggle with the idea of having different career paths from darts because the prize money in women’s competitions is usually low and this is insufficient to support full-time professional status. However, players still think that the season has changed. Women participating in mixed competitions at the World Championship is the clearest signal that the sport is progressing, and women are not there just to watch.

The hope among players and fans is that Greaves and her fellow women competitors will go further in this year’s championship and show fans around the world that darts is a sport where women can succeed at the highest levels
